Go to visit the site of Jack’s Beanstalk and find the wishing well at its base. Toss this coin into the well and wish for a River seed. The bucket will rise from the well, and the seed will be within it. This is the first step. Take the seed then and go to the great River. Plant the seed in the right location — a clear, fertile place as wide as your hand — and then make camp upon the site. In the morning, you will awake, and it will have grown into a bridge that spans the River. This is the second step. Once across, you will ascend the Mountain. At the top will be a lovely castle. Alan slips out from behind the headboard and sits alone on the edge of the bed. He picks up a pack of cigarettes off his nightstand. He wants to smoke so badly, but Nancy has been trying to get him to quit. She’s been trying for years. Alan puts the cigarettes back on the nightstand.  “Is that bacon?” rattles the windowpane as the mower passes by once more. Alan savors the smell of fried bacon rising from the kitchen downstairs. He isn’t much of an eater and almost never touches breakfast, but every Sunday morning Nancy fixes Alan bacon and toast. She tries to coax him into taking a bite or two.
