You look at the Island today and there’s nothing. Empty lots, empty houses. You don’t know what it looked like before the storm, man, it was beautiful. They cut down all the dead trees and bulldozed the houses they couldn’t save. But before the storm, there was stuff everywhere: trees, cars, dogs, barbecues. Mae eased her body to a sitting position in the rushing water. It was so cold that pain shot up her legs and she grimaced, tears coming to her eyes. She felt the heavy weight of sorrow wash over her once more. The water continued unabated.
