You look at the Island today and there’s nothing. Empty lots, empty houses. You don’t know what it looked like before the storm, man, it was beautiful. They cut down all the dead trees and bulldozed the houses they couldn’t save. But before the storm, there was stuff everywhere: trees, cars, dogs, barbecues. And right after the storm, it was like there was even more stuff, ‘cause all of a sudden that shit was all over your front yard. Mae eased her body to a sitting position in the rushing water. It was so cold that pain shot up her legs and she grimaced, tears coming to her eyes. She felt the heavy weight of sorrow wash over her once more. The water continued unabated. It didn’t just flow gently around her but pushed and sloshed at her back, the rocks and grit beneath her legs being driven away in swirls of brown and gold.
